A Doodle Notes Fan Mode Web Series initiative
aiming to produce 3D animated adaptations of the book
Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins.

I am a HUGE FAN of The Underland Chronicles - Suzanne Collins' series of books before The Hunger Games. The first book in the series sparked my love for books. And taught me a lot on how to tell a story.

I also love films. So ever since I've read the books, I have waited for a film or animation adaptation of the series. I figured, since it's such an awesome series, they'd make an adaptation for sure.

But years passed, Harry Potter is done, more books are being made into a movie, The Hunger Games was made into a movie, what happened to The Underland Chronicles? Why haven't Hollywood or anyone make a movie out of it?

There have been some fan theories. The characters are too young, the setting is too dark, it'd be too expensive. And so on and so forth. All of which, I think, are excuses!

I mean, Hollywood has been known to pull off shots that are thought to be impossible in the past. The technology in making a movie has become more and more accessible and easier to learn as years go by. I believe that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE, especially in filmmaking.

If they can create a new planet, a diverse species of aliens, lots of dinosaurs, cities crumbling to pieces, transforming robots, dragons, spaceships, ETCETERA, using a computer. I'm pretty sure they can create an underground city, a giant cockroach and a 2-year old baby too. And if they can show you how it's like to be outer space, to be underwater, to be inside an atom, then they can surely find a way to show you how it's like to be in total darkness.

There's always a way to visually perceive stuff using art.

So whatever is the REAL reason why they haven't made a movie yet, I don't really know. And I sure don' t want to accept the reasons above.

SO! Since no one seems to be planning on bringing the books to life through films or animation, since I love the book so much, and since I know a thing or two on how to make films and animation:

I decided to do it myself.

I may not be able to make it as perfect as everyone might expect, due to my current limitations, but I sure will try.

So.

What is...

The Underland Project is a BIG FAN PROJECT that I will be doing for A LOT of reasons:

  1. I'm a big fan of the series.
  2. I really want to see the book come to life through films and animation.
  3. The series ended with a HUGE CLIFFHANGER.
  4. I want to challenge myself as a filmmaker/storyteller.

Let's focus on the last reason.

Like I said, this is a BIG FAN PROJECT. This could take me YEARS to finish. Which I don't mind, really. And you probably won't too once you know what the project really is.

Possibly more than a fan initiative, this project is also EXPERIMENTAL.
Through this project, I wanted to answer the following questions:

  1. Can I really make a film?
  2. Especially an animated one?
  3. Can I do it using only FREE or OPEN-SOURCE software?
  4. Can I do it using only a laptop?
  5. Can I do it with little to no budget?
  6. Can I do it mostly by myself?
  7. If needed, am I good at collaborating with people?
  8. Can I get people to work on projects like this?
  9. Am I crazy?
Yes! To the last question. But the rest?
I am going to have to go through the project first to know the answer.
And I really want answers to those questions.

So The Underland Project is a big fan project that I want to venture into to know my limits and push the boundaries of not only my skills but also the technology that I currently have.

I know, for sure, that regardless of the outcome, I will learn A LOT through this project which I can use to make even more film or animation projects.

I wanted to start with a fan project because it would be okay for me to make mistakes with it, as opposed to working on an original story. I'm kinda a perfectionist, So I want to run some tests first before working on my original stories. Tis' why The Underland Project.

ANYWAYS!

In this project, I am aiming to produce the following products:

MAIN PRODUCT

5-Episode 3D animated Web Series and a Fan Trailer/Teaser

Everything I'd be doing in this project will focus in producing 5 3D animated episodes based on the events that happened in the first book within Chapters 2 to 8.

I WON'T BE ANIMATING THE WHOLE BOOK.

But that could change depending on the future of the web series.
And everything relies so much on how the first and second episodes perform.

Each episode will be a ground for me to exercise some certain topics in producing an animation. Just click on the images below to know the details of each episode and what I'm aiming to learn from each of them.

THIS IS A FAN MODE PROJECT!

I don't plan on monetizing the main products, only the sub-products. I just love the series so much that's why I decided to initiate it. If you are interested about the series and want to read them yourself, the best suggestion I can give right now is to search where you can get them through Google. ๐Ÿ˜€

This is Doodle Notes' FIRST BIG PROJECT following The Doodle Notes System. And hopefully it won't be the last. I will try my best to finish this but like I said, things also rely on YOU.

So stay tuned, tell more people about this and, well, give me your;
